Season Greetings from Jailed Democracy Advocate

The lawyer, Elchin Sadigov met with his client on Tuesday (December 22) at Prison #13,  where Mammadli is currently serving a five-and-a-half-year prison term.

Speaking after the meeting, Sadigov said that the human rights defender’s gastric pains have become acuter due to improper treatment and his health has worsened.

Background: Anar Mammadli is a founding chairman of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center, which promotes democratic institutions and civil and political rights. Mammadli was imprisoned on charges of illegal entrepreneurship, tax evasion, and abuse of official authority in a trial widely seen as a reaction to his organization’s critical assessment of Azerbaijan’s presidential election in 2013.
