STUDENT JOURNALIST DISMISSED FROM OIL ACADEMY

An order has been issued to dismiss Poligon Information Agency (pia.az) editor and fourth year student of “Oil Mechanics” faculty at Azerbaijan State Oil Academy Elmin Badalov from the University.

“Oil Mechanics” faculty Deputy Dean Ilman Hasanov told the Institute for Reporters` Freedom and Safety that E.Badalov has been dismissed because he failed three exams.
In response to the appeal of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety to organize reexamination for Badalov via participation of the Students International Cooperation Public Union, I. Hasanov said that this is impossible.
“Elmin Badalov’s dismissal from the university is related to his three failures and the Rector has already issued an order regarding this,” said Hasanov. “Therefore, I believe that any attempt concerning this will be meaningless.”
Elmin Badalov told IRFS that his dismissal is connected to his journalism work. “I want them to organize reexamination to prove that this incident shows their biased position towards me.”
As per request of IRFS, the Students International Cooperation Public Union sent an appeal to the Education Ministry to assess the results of Badalov’s exams by a special commission. However, the Ministry has not responded yet.
On 12 November 2009 Elmin Badalov published an article on pia.az website (“reportage from Azerbaijan State Oil Aacademy) regarding bribe cases and financial frauds in Azerbaijan State Oil Academy. The student-journalist claims that pressure used against him is related to his article.
