Today (26 August) in the Supreme Court, under the Chairmanship of Judge Ilham Jafarov, a hearing took place on the cassation complaint of “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid.
G. Zahid’s defense lawyer Elchin Sadigov told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety.
“Judge Ilham Jafarov upheld the verdict issued by the Yasamal Court and Appellate Court. We will file a complaint against the decision of the Supreme Court in the European Court of Human Rights,” said Sadigov.
Recall that on 7 March 2008 on the basis of a verdict issued by Yasamal District Court Judge Sudaba Mammedova, Zahid was sentenced to 3.5 years of imprisonment under article 127.2.3 of Criminal Code (to cause minor health damage with the intention of hooliganism), and 6 months under article 221 (hooliganism) – 4 years altogether.
On 13 May Appellate Court Judge Abid Abdinbayov upheld this verdict.
