TEXTBOOK ABOUT TUBERCULOSIS WRITTEN BY IMPRISONED FORMER MINISTER NOT ALLOWED IN AZERBAIJAN

A lawsuit put forth by relatives of imprisoned former Minister of Health Ali Insanov was not fulfilled today.

The university-level textbook, called “Verem” (Tuberculosis), was printed one year ago in Moscow, but is not being permitted into the country by Customs officers.

Insanov’s lawyer Togrul Babayev told Radio Liberty that today the Azizbeyov District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Jayhun Gadimov, gave no justification for not fulfilling the lawsuit.

Babayev also said that tomorrow, June 12, the Baku Appellate Court will consider Insanov’s lawsuit against State TV channel AZTV. In the lawsuit Insanov claims that footage showing gold swords and other expensive items allegedly found in the former minister’s house are defamatory, and none of the items belong to him.

Last year, Insanov was imprisoned for 11 years for committing financial crimes; however he was initially arrested in the run-up to the 2005 parliamentary elections on charges of planning a coup.
