TRIAL OF JOURNALIST ACCUSED OF STEALING ELECTRICITY BEGINS

The court proceedings on the criminal case launched against IRFS correspondent to Nakhchivan Hakimeldostu Mehdiyev under Article 189-1.1 of the Criminal Code (diverting electricity) will commence shortly.

The preliminary court hearing on the case will be held at 11 am on September 2nd, Mehdiyev reported to IRFS.
BACKGROUND
On July 15 the local authorities stopped supply of electricity to Mehdiyev’s house under the pretext of its illegal use in the nearby carwash. However, according to Mehdiyev, he paid all the dues for using his electricity and has the supporting documents. According to Mehdiyev, the pressure on him started at the beginning of July after he accompanied the columnist of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Michael Ludwig in his trip to Nakhchivan, despite the attempts by the local authorities to prevent the German journalist from this trip.
Mehdiyev is accused of illegal use of electricity to the amount of 1050 AZN. He believes that the trumped up case is nothing but a political order aiming to punish him for his human rights defence and journalistic activities.
