TRIAL OF TALEH KHASMAMMADOV BEGINS

Yesterday, Kurdamir Regional Court, under Judge Rafig Baghirov, opened criminal proceedings against human rights defender and blogger Taleh Khasmammadov, who is the chairman of “Law and Rights – 2010”.

Taleh Khasmammadov was arrested on November 12, 2011. He was charged with hooliganism against police officers and charges were launched against him under Article 221.2 and 221.3 (hooliganism). He was later charged with Article 315 (resisting and using physical assault against a government official).
Lawyer Asabali Mustafayev filed petitions requesting the court to allow Taleh Khasmammadov to sit next to him, and to allow audio and video recordings of the procedures. The Judge granted one motion, permitting video recordings.
In his interview with Objective TV, Mustafayev reported that the police officers who testified as victims gave contradictory testimonies, avoided his questions and in general hindered the process.
In his speech, Khasmammadov alleged that police officers had implemented provocations against him, in relation to his activities as a human rights defender and a blogger.  He also noted that citizens from Goychay and surrounding regions had repeatedly appealed to him regarding legal violations committed by local law enforcement agencies, and that he had begun investigating these cases. He believes that this was the reason he was arrested.
The judge scheduled the next hearing for March 13th.
