US SENATOR SENDS LETTER TO HILLARY CLINTON REGARDING JAILED YOUTH ACTIVIST

US senator Mark Kirk sent a letter to State Secretary Hillary Clinton regarding jailed youth activist and blogger Bakhtiyar Hajiyev. The letters says that Hajiyev’s rights, established under Azerbaijani Constitution and International Human Rights Declaration, have been violated, Radio Liberty reports.

The Senator calls on the State Secretary to continue calling on Azerbaijan to follow international human rights standards, to release Hajiyev until his court proceedins kick off, and to investigate ill-treatment against him.
BACKGROUND

The senator recalls that Harvard University graduate Bakhtiyar Hajiyev ran in 2010 parliamentary elections. He was first detained for dodging military service on November 18, 2010. Upon his assistance in arrangement of youth protests via Facebook, Hajiyev was arrested on March 4. he is officially accused of not obeying his documented commitment on not leaving Ganja city.
