NEXT STAGE OF JAILED YOUTH ACTIVIST’S CASE TO BE HEARD IN SUMGAYIT COURT

A new court hearing on Jabbar Savalan’s case will be held in Sumgayit City Court on March 28. The youth activist of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party is charged with illegal drug possession.

The youth’s lawyer, Anar Gasimov told Objective TV that the contradictory statement of the narcology doctors that examined Savalan could be used against him. Therefore the defendant side will insist on an independent examination and on inviting the narcology hospital’s doctors, who submitted the conclusion on the case. The petition has been submitted to the court.
To note, the experts did not reveal any physical or mental drug addiction at Savalan and said he did not need any compulsory treatment. But they said the youth could use drugs. This means the court can recognize Savalan has used drugs in the way they have recognized the same for Eynullah Fatullayev.
BACKGROUND
Azerbaijan Popular Front Party member Jabbar Savalanli was arrested on February 5, 2011. He is being charged with drug possession, but it is widely thought that his arrest was politically motivated, linked to criticism of the government he posted on social networking sites.
The medical examination conducted by the Health Ministry’s Drug Abuse Clinic revealed that Savalanli was not a drug addict, and did not require treatment. However, the document did not rule out that the youth activist could have used drugs.
