WASHINGTON DECLARATION ON WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

As we earlier reported, UNESCO held an even on 3 May – World Press Freedom Day in Washington from May 1 to 3.  According to Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) Director Emin Huseynov, one of the attendees, the event adopted the Washington Declaration: :21st Century Media – New Frontiers, New Barriers”.

As we earlier reported, UNESCO held an even on 3 May - World Press Freedom Day in Washington from May 1 to 3.  According to Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) Director Emin Huseynov, one of the attendees, the event adopted the Washington Declaration: :21st Century Media – New Frontiers, New Barriers”.

The declaration emphasizes the importance of the operation of media and journalsits for the present century. The declaration also includes calls to both the UNESCO and the UNESCO member states. The main calls for the member states include: to reaffirm and implement their commitment under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to recognize and ensure that the same principles of freedom of expression apply equally to the Internet and other new information technologies, as they apply to traditional forms of media. The call for UNESCO included  promotion of Internet and social networks as platforms for democratic discussion and civic participation;
Huseynov added that over 200 participants from different coutnries were in attendance. Bloggers Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizadeh, were arrested in 2009 July and released alter, were invited to the event. However, because they cannot leave the country, they joined the event via skype.
