Today, the Sumgayit City Court held a closed hearing on the motion filed by arrested Azerbaijan Popular Front Party youth member Jabbar Savalanli requesting an alternative drug abuse examination.
After the hearing, the lawyers Asabali Mustafayev and Anar Gasimov said that the motion was not fulfilled and they will appeal against the decision.
Azerbaijan Popular Front Party member Jabbar Savalanli was arrested on February 5, 2011. He is being charged with drug possession, but it is widely thought that his arrest was politically motivated, and linked to criticism of the government he posted on social networking sites.
The medical examination conducted by the Health Ministry’s Drug Abuse Clinic revealed that Savalanli was not a drug addict, and did not require treatment. However, the document did not rule out that the youth activist could have used drugs. Citing that this contradictory statement could be used against the activist, the defendant's side filed a motion requiring an alternative examination.
