APPEAL OF JAILED YOUTH ACTIVIST BAKHTIYAR HAJIYEV AGAINST THE PRISON SENTENCE REJECTED

Today, Ganja City Appeals Court heard the appeal filed by jailed youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev. Judge Chingiz Mammadov presided over the hearing.

The Court did not grant the appeal and upheld the 2-year prison sentence issued by the court of first instance, Intigam Amirov, head of defense group for Hajiyev, reported to IRFS.
Amirov said that they were not surprised with the decision and will take the issue to the Supreme Court.
BACKGROUND
Criminal case against Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was launched in the end January, 2011. At that time, he signed a statement of commitment not to leave Ganja city. In the end-February his pre-trial detention was replaced with a release under police control. Ganja City Court sentenced the youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev to 2 years in jail on May 18, 2011, charging him with dodging a military service.
It is widely recognized that Hajiyev was arrested for his activity on social networking sites and his support of the March 11 Great People’s Day campaign.
