Arrested journalist claims threat to his life

There is a threat to journalist Fuad Huseynov’s life in prison #12, the journalist’s mother Susana Huseynova told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) on February 20. “Fuad told me about it yesterday when we talked on the phone. The prison management suspects my son of being the author of the complaint published in local media, which deals with illegalities in the prison. Fuad told me that he is not aware of such a complaint” said Huseynova.

Ogtay Gulaliyev, coordinator of the Azerbaijan without Political Prisoners Public Alliance, said that the a/m appeal, addressed to the president and other relevant authorities, was disseminated by his organization. Gulaliyev added that this appeal was signed by a number of inmates, except for Fuad Huseynov.

Spokesperson of the Justice Ministry Penitentiary Service, Mehman Huseynov, told the IRFS that he was not familiar the case: “If Fuad Huseynov experiences any problems, let him appeal to the Penitentiary Service. We are ready to investigate this case and take necessary measures” noted Sadigov.

Background: Fuad Huseynov was arrested in October 2010 on trumped-up charges, after fighting against and going public about illegal actions of employees of law-enforcement agencies and government in Ujar region of Azerbaijan. On September 26, 2011 Huseynov was sentenced to six and a half years in prison under Article 221.3 of the Criminal Code (hooliganism).
