ASIF MERZILI AND TEZADLAR NEWSPAPER DEMAND COMPENSATION FROM PRESS COUNCIL

The preliminary hearing on the appeal filed by Tezadlar newspaper’s chief editor Asif Merzili was held on September 22, 2010. The appeal against Nasimi District Court’s March 20th, 2010 decision on the lawsuit filed against Azerbaijani Press Council was held in the Baku Appeals Court. The hearing was presided over by judge Ismayil Valiyev.

The plaintiff Asif Merzili, editor-in-chief of Tezadlar newspaper, and his lawyer Alirza Habilov attended the hearing, while the defendant was not present.
Habilov, the plaintiff’s lawyer, stated that there is a necessity for the presence of the defendant at the hearing and asked the Judge to postpone the hearing.
The judge postponed the process to 3:20 pm, October 6th, 2010.
Video and photography was not permitted in the court hearing.
BACKGROUND
On September 16th, 2009, the Press Council included Tezadlar newspaper on the “black list” considering it yellow journalisim. Merzili filed a lawsuit to defend his honor and dignity and demanded that the defendant pay compensation, but Nasimi District Court did not fulfill A. Merzili’s lawsuit.
Tezadlar newspaper has been published since 14 April, 1993. The newspaper, earlier published as a weekly, has been published daily since 2008.
