AZERBAIJAN NATIONAL STATEHOOD PARTY HEAD NEMAT PANAHLI ARRESTED

Yesterday, January 11th, Nasimi District Court held an an extraordinary hearing on the citizen Eldar Rzayev’s appeal against the Azerbaijan National Statehood Party (AMDP) chairman Nemat Panahli and his friend Jeyhun Farzullayev under article 221.3 (The hooliganism committed with application of a weapon or subjects, used as the weapon) of the Criminal Code (CC), N. Panahli’s lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Objective today. Judge Sayyad Gafani chaired the hearing.

Sadigov noted that Nasimi District Police Department inspector Mushfig Alimammadov had filed a motion with District Prosecutor's Office demanding pre-trial detention:

"Nasimi District Prosecutor Agshin Ziyadov will submit a statement to the court after considering the motion. The judge sentenced both persons to 2 months of pre-trial detention. N. Panahli and J. Farzullayev will be transferred to Baku Investigation Prison”.

Although the hearing had been scheduled to be held at 2pm, the process was delayed  till the evening hours and media representatives were not allowed to participate in the hearing.

BACKGROUND

Azerbaijan National Statehood Party Chairman Nemat Panahli was detained by plain clothed persons on January 8th and taken to Nasimi District Police Office #21. The reason for his detention was citizen Eldar Rzayev’s appeal to the police on January 7th. He said that he was beaten and cudgeled in Mirali Gashgay street by Panahli and his friend Jeyhun Farzaliyev. Criminal case has been launched against both persons under Article 221.3 of Criminal Code (the hooliganism committed with application of a weapon or subjects, used as the weapon).

According to his supporters, Panahli was actually arrested for his critical opinions published in the press outlets, including the Nota PS, during the parliamentary elections and after the elections as well.
