Baku court toughens punishment for oppositionist Akhmedov

Oppositionist Niyameddin Akhmedov, who has been in solitary confinement since February 26 and is on hunger strike in protest against the violation of his rights, will be transferred to a closed prison for one year, the court ruled.

On March 3, it became known that oppositionist Niyameddin Akhmedov, convicted in Azerbaijan, went on a hunger strike in protest against being placed in solitary confinement. Before that, his relatives made public the ban on telephone conversations that Akhmedov had been placed under in the colony.

Niyameddin Akhmedov was sentenced to 13 years in prison on October 8, 2021, on charges of financing terrorism, calling for a fight against the state, and illegal trafficking of prohibited items. Akhmedov himself stated that the case was fabricated. Human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.

Akhmedov has been in solitary confinement for 23 days now, and he has been on a hunger strike all this time, the chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Ali Kerimli reported on his Facebook page* on March 21. He noted that Akhmedov had been deprived of contact with his family for a long time and “only now, on the occasion of the Novruz holiday,” his father Arif Akhmedov was allowed to meet with his son in the colony.
