CO-RAPPORTEUS ISSUE STATEMENT IN CONNECTION WITH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S DEATH

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Monitoring Committee Co-rapporteurs on Azerbaijan Andreas Herkel and Yevgeniya Jivkova issued a statement in connection with the death of “Tolishi sado” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Novruzali Mammadov. They said that they were deeply saddened by the death of “Tolishi-sado” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Novruzali Mammadov.

“In February 2007 he was charged with treason and incitement of ethnic/national and religious hatred and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. However, Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Federation considered him a political prisoner. PACE had some serious doubts regarding how fairly the trial was conducted.  Therefore, PACE called for Mammadov’s release on humanitarian grounds because of his health and age. These calls went unanswered.”
It is said at the end of the statement that the destruction of N.Mammadov’s linguistic manuscripts by law enforcement organs when he was detained is regretful.
