COURT DOES NOT ALLOW TO OPEN TV CHANNEL IN SUMGAYIT

On 24 June, in the Baku Economic Court #1, under the Chairmanship of Judge Museyib Bayramov, a decision was issued on the lawsuit of “Legal Education of Sumgayit Youth” (LESY) Public Union against Azerbaijan’s National TV and Radio Council (NTRC). LESY President Elchin Mammad told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety.

During the hearing plaintiff, LESY President Elchin Mammad asked the court to adopt a decision to consider the failure of the National TV and Radio Council to grant a license to LESY to open a new TV regional channel in Sumgayit unfounded and to grant a frequency.
Considering the lawsuit unfounded, NTRC Representative Togrul Mammadov said that since one local TV channel operates in Sumgayit, and all nationwide TV channels and 11 cable TVs are broadcast in Sumgayit, there is no need to open a new television channel. NTRC chairman asked the judge not to fulfill the lawsuit.
The judge issued a decision not to fulfill LESY’s lawsuit.
Elchin Mammad told IRFS that they will file an appeal against this decision.
