Court Refuses to Release Natig Jafarli on Bail

Nasimi district Court considered the motion to replace the pre-trial detention measure selected against REAL Movement’s arrested executive secretary Natig Jafarli with bail. Lawyer Javad Javadov reported on the closed hearing. Natig Jafarli was arrested on 12 August 2016. He was charged under Articles 192.1 (illegal business) and 308.2 (abuse of official powers – when such actions lead to serious consequences) of the Criminal Code, and Nasimi District Court sentenced him to four-months of pre-trial detention.

According to Javad Javadov, the court rejected the motion for the reason that “the circumstances such as Natig Jafarli hiding from the investigating authority or exerting pressure on witnesses have not been eliminated.”

The lawyer added that the decision on extension would be appealed.
