On September 30 lawyer Anar Qasimli met with the detained journalist and human rights activist Parviz Hashimli in the investigative detention facility of the Ministry of National Security, Qasimli has told the Obyektiv TV today.
According to the lawyer, the journalist is in normal health, but he complains of his detention conditions, particularly of the facts that lights are always on in his cell and that he is not provided with newspapers like Yeni Musavat, Azadliq and Bizim Yol.
“Parviz Hashimli has requested the presidential candidates, except for some, to inform the public about the trumped-up criminal charges brought against him during the debates” said the lawyer.
The lawyer also noted that the journalist suffered physical abuse during the detention, his knee was scratched.
“Hashimli wants to meet his family and also be transferred to Baku investigative detention center. Just to note that no investigative measure has been taken since the journalist’s arrest. Parviz considers the charges ungrounded. He also rejected the claims that he was forced to give evidence against Ali Karimli. Parviz also told me that he was asked provocative questions, like “don’t you incidentally bring the weapons for Ali Karimli” said Anar Qasimli.
Background: Parviz Hashimli was detained on September 17 by employees of the Ministry of National Security. On September 18 the journalist was handed down a two-month pretrial detention sentence by the Sabail District Court awaiting trial under two articles of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code: Article 206.3.2 (smuggling of firearms on preliminary arrangement by an organized group) and 228.2.1 (illegal obtaining, storing, carrying firearms and their spare parts on preliminary arrangement by an organized group).
