“DISCONTNUING FREE BROADCASTING OF FOREIGN RADIO STATIONS WOULD BE SERIOUS BLOW TO MEDIA PLURALISM”

“Discontinuing foreign radio stations in Azerbaijan would be a serious blow to media pluralism.” OSCE Baku Office Head, Ambassador Jose Luis Herrero told this to “Radio Liberty” on 28 November.

“Media pluralism is one of essential issues for Azerbaijan’s democracy,” said Herrero. “The participation of organizations like “Radio Liberty” is very positive in this process. It is possible to listen to different opinions and thoughts on this radio. Discontinuing the broadcasting of these radios would be a serious blow to media pluralism.”

National TV and Radio Council Chairman Nushiravan Maharramli said that the broadcasting of foreign radio stations is not conforming to law and therefore it could be ceased as of next year. Three foreign radio stations – “Radio Liberty”, VOA, and BBC are being broadcast via Azerbaijan FM.
