EDITORS UNION MEETS TO DISCUSS LANKARAN VISIT

The Union of Editors met today at the IRFS press center to hear reports from a group of Union editors that returned to Baku after a one-day visit to Lankaran.

The reporting group, consisting of employees of Yeni Musavat and Khural newspapers, Turan news agency, and IRFS met with, both, supporters and opponents of Janiyev.
Khural newspaper’s correspondent in the southern regions Aydin Janiyev was detained on September 8th due to a complaint from religious followers from Sarpakaran village of Lenkaran.  The journalist was charged with breaking  the windows of the village  mosque and insulting the religious men there. He was sentenced to 12 days of administrative detention.  A criminal case has been launched against Janiyev under Article 221.2.2 of the Criminal Code (hooliganism – resisting a state employee who is preventing violation of social order).  Lenkeran Regional Court sentenced him to 2 months of pre-trial detention (as of September 20th).  
Upon hearing the report from their members, the Union of Editors decided to prepare a report about the visit and to try to find a solution to the conflict through negotiations.
