EYNULLA FATULLAYEV’S NAME MENTIONED IN TEXT BOOK ON PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE WHICH IS TAUGHT IN ENGLAND SCHOOLS

Today, 14 January, imprisoned Editor-in-chief of "Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realniy Azerbaijan" newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev contacted his parents via telephone. Eynulla’s father Emin Fatullayev told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety. “Eynula said his situation is normal and he does not have any health problems,” said Emin Fatullayev.

“Recently he received about 200 cards and letters of support from the USA, Britain, Japan, and Germany. It is said in one of the letters addressed to him by a group of youth from England, ‘We are aware of your fight for the freedom of speech from our textbook on prisoners of conscience and we express our support for you through this letter.’’

"Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realniy Azerbaijan" newspapers' editor-in-chief Eynulla Fatullayev was accused in libel and defamation and in 21 April 2007 was sentenced to 2.5 years of imprisonment.  Then Fatullayev was convicted under articles 214.1 (threatening terror), 283.2.2 (incitement of ethnic/national, social or religious hatred abusing authority), and 213.2.2 (tax evasion) of the Criminal Code and was sentenced to 8.5 years of imprisonment on 30 October 2007.
