On 6 December, Emin Fatullayev visited his son, imprisoned editor-in-chief of "Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realniy Azerbaijan" newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev in Prison #12. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Emin Fatullayev.
Eynulla does not have any complaints about prison conditions or his health, according to Fatullayev’s father.
According to Emin Fatullayev, support letters were sent to the editor-in-chief from different countries in connection with the Day of International Human Rights on 10 December.
The authors of the letters criticized the persecutions against journalists, demonstrated solidarity with free media, and demanded for the freedom of imprisoned journalists in Azerbaijan.
Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realny Azerbaijan" newspapers' editor-in-chief Eynulla Fatullayev was sentenced to 2.5 years of imprisonment on 21 April 2007 for insulting honor and dignity. Later he was convicted under articles 214.1 (threatening terror), 283.2.2 (incitement of ethnic/national, social or religious hatred abusing authority), and 213.2.2 (tax evasion) of the Criminal Code and was sentenced to 8.5 years of imprisonment on 30 October 2007.
“Realniy Azerbaijan” has been published as weekly newspaper, and “Gundelik Azerbaijan” was published as a daily newspaper under since 2005. Eynulla Fatullayev established the newspapers and was the editor-in-chief of both publications. The newspapers ceased their activity after the arrest of editor-in-chief in 2007.
