Yesterday, 6 April, Ayanda Mursaliyeva visited her husband, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid in Prison # 17. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by A. Mursaliyeva. The editor-in-chief does not have any complaints about his health or prison conditions, and he continues to read in English, according to Mursaliyeva.
During the meeting, G. Zahid said that he does not have any alternative other than the co-rapporteur to solve the political prisoner issue. “I am waiting impatiently to meet the co-rapporteur,”he said.
G. Zahid was surprised that his brother Sakit Zahidov, who was included in the amnesty act signed on 17 March, is still in prison.
“Taking into consideration that Andreas Herkel is going to visit Azerbaijan, they should have released him already,” said the editor-in-chief.
Ganimat Zahid was convicted under articles 127.2.3 (hooliganism with intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and imprisoned for four years.
