
Defendant F.Novruzoglu filed a verbal motion to invite Sakit Zahidov and Rustaveli Guliyev as witnesses in connection with torture cases at prison # 14. Note that both Sakit Zahidov and Rustaveli Guliyev were previously held at prison #14. Judge A.Ismayilov issued a decision to fulfill the motion.
F.Novruzoglu stated that facts given to Chingiz Ganizade in connection with illegal and criminal cases in prisons are concealed by Ganizade. Novruzoglu emphasized that Prison #14 Chief Arshad Hasanov gave 30 000 USD to Chingiz Ganizade to conceal these kinds of facts.
Prison #14 Chief Arshad Hasanov witnessed during the hearing and denied F.Novruzoglu’s charges saying that there have never been torture cases in the prison.
Plaintiff’s lawyer R.Mustafayev filed a motion to send articles in question published in “Milletim” newspaper on 13 May 2009 (edition 7) to clarify whether abusive expressions have been used in the articles or not. Judge A.Ismayilov fulfilled the motion and scheduled the next hearing for 20 August at 9:30 a.m.
Human rights defender Chingiz Ganizade filed a lawsuit under articles 147.2 (accusing someone in grave or especially grave crimes) and 148 (insult) of the Criminal Code in the special format against F.Novruzoglu due to series of articles in “Milletim” newspaper by F.Novruzoglu about criminal cases in prisons and concealing of these cases by human rights defenders.
