HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS CONDUCT PRESS CONFERENCE

Today, 16 April, in the Azerbaijan Media Center, the Institute for Peace and Democracy held a conference in connection with “Government Pressure and Harassment Campaign against Political Parties, Media Outlets and Journalists”.

Conference participants talked about growing pressure against civil society, journalists and NGOs.
The Chairperson of the Institute for Peace and Democracy Leyla Yunus said that pressure and persecution campaigns are steps to create fear in people who think differently. “We need to tell everyone that NGOs and civil society are the next targets after press,” added L. Yunus.
Then lawyer Annagi Hajibeyli spoke and said that silencing of people with independent thoughts is carried out in several ways. “They are either left without financial resources, or are bought off, NGOs are shut down or criminal-civil measures are taken,” he said.
The Institute for Peace and Democracy addressed an appeal to the public of the country and international organizations on behalf of civil society entities.
