Tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. Human Rights Watch will present a new report on property rights, “They Took Everything from Me’: Forced Evictions, Unlawful Expropriations, and House Demolitions in Azerbaijan’s Capital,” at the Diplomat Hotel at 185, Suleyman Rahimov Street.
Human Rights Watch has documented how the authorities have illegally expropriated properties and forcibly evicted dozens of families in four Baku neighborhoods. According to the report, at times authorities sometimes give little or no warning, come in the middle of the night, and demolish homes with residents’ possessions remaining inside.
One of the four neighborhoods described in the report is Flag Square, a seaside group of apartment buildings adjacent to the construction site for the Baku Crystal Hall, the venue for the May 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.
The report will be presented by Jane Buchanan, author of the report and leading researcher, the Human Rights Watch Europe and Central Asia branch; and Human Rights Watch Caucasus researcher Giorgi Gogia.
