Today, the Sabail District Court held a preliminary hearing on the lawsuit filed by imprisoned journalist Eynulla Fatullayev against Zakir Garalov, General Prosecutor of the Republic of Azerbaijan on violation of his right to the presumption of innocence. Fatullyev demands an apology.
Despite the defendant side claimed the lawsuit was groundless, the Judge scheduled a court hearing. The Judge did not set a date for the hearing.
BACKGROUND
In 2007, Eynulla Fatullayev, editor-in-chief of “Realniy Azerbaydjan” and “Gundelik Azerbaycan” newspapers, was sentenced to 8.5 years in jail for threatening terrorism, amongst other charges.
