IRFS APPEALS TO JUDGE PRESIDING OVER GANIMAT ZAHID’S CASE

February 25th, 2008
The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety has sent an appeal to Yasamal District Court Judge Sudaba Mammedova to hand down a fair verdict in the case of “Azadlig” Newspaper Chief Editor Ganimat Zahid.

The letter has already been registed in the court clerk’s office. In the appeal it is emphasizes that the State Prosecutor’s request to imprison Ganimat Zahid for five years has already stirred up local and international condemnation, and to give Zahid such a prison sentence would negatively affect Azerbaijan’s image.  It is also noted in the appeal that on March 13, in connection with Azerbaijan’s other three wrongfully imprisoned journalists (Eynulla Fatullayev, Sakit Zahidov and Mushfig Huseynov), in a meeting of PACE’s monitoring committee appointing a special rapporteur for political prisoners in Azerbaijan will be discussed. Article from the European Convention of Human Rights related to Zahid’s are also cited in the appeal.
Recall that it is anticipated that the verdict on Ganimat’s Zahid’s case will be revealed to tomorrow, February 26.
