IRFS INVESTIGATING HARASSMENT OF STREET NEWSPAPER SALESMEN

An article published in "Bizim Yol" newspaper on 15 February 2008 reported the street newspaper sellers are facing problems in Baku.

According to the article, many sellers are detained and taken to police departments every day, their newspapers are confiscated and they are fined. To clarify this matter, the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety sent an appeal to the Minister of Interior, and also addressed information requests to the Head of Baku Police Department and to the chiefs of all of Baku’s all regional police departments. In the request to the minister, IRFS asks him to investigate this matter, to give an order for relevant measures to be taken, and inform IRFS about what he learns about this problem. And in the request to the local police chiefs, IRFS gives concrete questions about such incidents.
