IRFS REPORT: PRESIDENT’S DECREE ON MASS MEDIA DEBUNKED

The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety resolutely condemns Republic of Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev's for falsely indicating that Point 10 of Article 19 of the law on Mass Media exists in his 7 May 2008 decree "on changes and additions to the Republic of Azerbaijan President's Decree 277 of 8 February 2000 'On application of the Republic of Azerbaijan's law 'On Mass Media".

IRFS has found irrefutable evidence that Point 10 of Article 19 of the Law on Mass Media, which was highly criticized by the Council of Europe because it gave government officials the power to close media outlets if the courts issued three decisions against them, was abolished on 28 December 2001, but the incumbent government falsified documents in an elaborate attempt to deceive both local and international community about the status of this legislation
