The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) Director Emin Huseynov and representative Rasul Jafarov attended several international events from 24 to 28 January. The IRFS representatives joined the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) winter session and two UNESCO events, including an International Symposium on Freedom of Expression and international conference on “Journalism Ethics in Europe and self-regulation: new media, old dilemmas”.
IRFS held meetings with co-rapporteurs of PACE for Azerbaijan Joseph Debono Grech and Pedro Agramunt Font de Mora, Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg. Huseynov and Jafarov also attended an event organized by Norwegian Human Rights House and Christof Strasser, the PACE Rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
Within the framework of the UNESCO events, Huseynov and Jafarov met with the UN's Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Opinion and Expression Frank la Rue, OSCE media commissioner Dunya Miyatovic, as well as representatives of several press organizations.
In both events, the human rights defenders discussed the general situation of human rights in Azerbaijan, including the recent election fraud in the country, freedom of expression problems, and the continued incarceration of Eynulla Fatullayev.
