JOURNALIST APPEALS AGAINST AZTV

On March 28th journalist Asef Guliyev, former correspondent of
Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting Closed Joint-Stock
Company (AZTV), appealed to the European Court of Human Rights against
AZTV, claiming that the company was restricting journalists’ freedom
of expression by signing short term (1, 2 or 3 months) labor contracts
with the employees.

According to Media Rights Institute, which is representing Guliyev, he
was dismissed from his position when AZTV refused to extend his
contract. The journalist believes that decisions by the local courts
on the case are illegal, so he has appealed to the European Court. The
journalist believes that the decisions by the local courts contradict
Azerbaijani laws, as well as the rights and freedoms stated in the
European Convention on Human Rights.
