JOURNALIST’S LAWSUIT AGAINST POLICE CHIEF NOT FULFILED

Yesterday, 28 July, during a hearing in the Nakchivan city Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Hijran Muradova, a verdict was issued on the lawsuit of Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety Nakchivan regional correspondent Hakimeldostu Mehdiyev against Nakchivan city Police Department Head Sabuhi Novruzov’s inactivity. The judge rejected the lawsuit claiming that the correspondents have not been concerned about the proceedings into the case since they appealed to police.

The lawsuit stems from the lack of a response to an appeal made to the Nakchivan city Police Department by H.Mehdiyev in connection with threatening calls into his mobile phone on 30 January 2009. The person that called and threatened the journalists still remains at large.
On 29 January 2009, at 6:55 IRFS Nakchivan regional correspondent Elman Abbasov received threatening phone calls into his mobile number. A person who introduced himself as Malik Ailyev from Sadarak region threatened and insulted E.Abbasov and H.Mehdiyev. M.Aliyev told them that he will explode their editorial office located in the office of Democracy and NGO Development Resource Center at 33 Ataturk Prospect in Nakchivan and will kill them. About ten minutes later that same person called Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Turan News Agency correspondent Malahet Nasibova and threatened her. On 4 February 2009 at 10:45 p.m. he called Mehdiyev’s phone, threatened them and used inappropriate language against them.
