JOURNALIST’S MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE TRIAL POSTPONED

The court process on the case of “Tolishi-Sedo” newspaper editor Novruzali Mammadov, who died in prison in August 2009, has been postponed. Mammadov’s widow and son have brought a case against the Justice Ministry Penitentiary Services Central Hospital, accusing them of medical negligence. a

The case was rejected on January 27, 2010, and now they are pursuing an appeal.
 The journalist’s lawyer Ramiz Mammadov told IRFS that the delay in the corut process was due to the absence of Justice Ministry representives. Judge Damirov postponed the hearing until April 13th.
In 2007, during a closed hearing, Mammadov was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for treason. Mammadov protested his innocence, and claimed that he had been discriminated against based on his ethnicity. Mammadov is from the Talysh minority.
The 68 year old editor-in-chief died in the Justice Ministry Penitentiary Services Central Hospital in 2009. Official organizations said that his death was due to illness; however the Defense Committee for Novruzali Mammadov`s rights and members of his family said that the editor-in-chief died due to medical negligence.
