LAWSUIT OF PRESSURED JOURNALIST AT ELECTION OBSERVATION FULFILLED

Today, the Surakhani District Court heard the lawsuit filed by the former parliamentary elections (7 November, 2010) observer Nizami Jafarov against the Surakhani District Prosecutor’s Office, Jafarov’s attorney Fariz Namazli told IRFS.

The plaintiff’s attorney Fariz Namazli and Surakhani District Prosecutor’s Office representative, Ibrahim Ismayilov, attended the hearing.

Namazli stated in the hearing that Jafarov’s right for freedom was restricted on 7 November, 2010. Namazli also deemed the police activities illegal and said that the prosecutor’s office didn’t investigate the case properly.

Ismayilov stated that the plaintiff’s claim was ungrounded.

The Judge Samir Mammadov announced the decision to fulfill the lawsuit.

BACKGROUND
Nizam Jafarov, who observed 7 November elections at Election Precinct #16 of Surakhani District Election Constituency #2, was held illegally for 6 hours by the persons who introduced themselves as Surakhani District Police Office employees. An appeal of complaint was sent to Surakhani District Prosecutor’s Office against the police action. As the Office didn’t fulfill the complaint on 18 February, 2011, Jafarov took the issue to the court.
