Yesterday, 27 May, the cassation complaint of the imprisoned "Tolishi Sado" (Voice of the Talysh) Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Novruzali Mammadov’s defense lawyer Ramiz Mammadov against the 26 December 2008 decision of the Baku Appellate Court was considered in the Supreme Court under the chairmanship of Judge Tapdig Mahmudov.
N. Mammadov was convicted under articles 274 of the Criminal Code.
The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety was told this by Hilal Mammadov, the Chairman of Defense Committee for N. Mammadov's Rights.
N. Mammadov was sentenced to 10 years by the decision of the Grave Crimes Court adopted by judge Shahin Abdullayev. On 26 December 2008 N.Mammadov’s appeal was considered and it was not fulfilled. In the appeal they demanded that Mammadov be released immediately and people behind his arrest be brought to responsibility.
According to H. Mammadov, the motion put forth in connection with N. Mammadov’s participation in the hearing was not fulfilled in the hearing yesterday that was held closed. The court upheld the decision of the first instance court.
H. Mammadov said that they are preparing an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights regarding law violations envisaged in the European Convention.
