The International Press Institute in Vienna, Austria disseminated a report named “World Press Freedom” regarding journalists who died in relation with their work in 2009.
According to “anspress.com” site, Azerbaijan has also been included in the report. It was noted in the report that one journalist died in Azerbaijan last year. The Asian continent is leading the report according to the death facts – 55 journalists. 28 journalists died in Latin America countries, 14 journalists died in Africa, 6 journalists died in the Near East and 7 journalists in Europe.
“Tolishi Sado” Newspaper Editor-in-chief N.Mammadov died in the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Services’ Central Hospital on 17 August 2009. In 2007, during a closed hearing, N.Mammadov was sentenced to ten year imprisonment under article 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan Republic. However, N.Mammadov, who had Talysh nationality, did not consider himself guilty and claimed that his arrest was related to ethnic-political motives and freedom of speech.
