Pre-trial detention of Nijat Aliyev extended for two months

Today (August 16) Nasimi District Court chaired by judge Shahin Abdullayev extended the pre-trial detention of Nijat Aliyev , editor in chief for azadxeber.org website, for two months, reported Media forum website.

The defendant’s lawyer Anar Gasimli said this court process reminded him the previous process which had taken place a month before, reports Media Forum.

“A month ago the detention term of my client Nijat Aliyev was similarly extended. The investigator announced that new charges would be filed against him, however neither new charges have been launched nor investigative actions have been implemented for the past period. The need for the extension of the detention term, as alleged by the investigator, was once again connected with new charges against Aliyev” said Gasimli.

On May 20th at 7:20pm, www.azadxeber.az website editor-in-chief Nijat Aliyev was detained in front of Killer menswear shop near Memar Ajami metro station and taken to Yasamal District Police Office #27. He was charged under Article 234.1 (Illegal manufacturing, purchase, storage, transportation, transfer or selling of narcotics/psychotropic substances) and sentenced to 2 months of pre-trial detention. Nijat Aliyev is currently being held in Kurdakhani investigative prison.
