Pressure on human rights defender’s family continues

On November 28, Ogtay Gulaliyev, the coordinator of the “Azerbaijan without Political Prisoners” Alliance and a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces, and his two sons went to Baku City Main Police Department based on a summons.

According to Gulaliyev, they were summoned in connection with a complaint by his female neighbor.

“The woman living first claimed that my sons had beaten her son. But she rescinded her complaint during the confrontation at the police office – and then even though she said she had no complaint, the police told me that they the case will be referred to court,” said Gulaliyev.

The human rights defender had previously faced pressure, using his son as a proxy. Gulaliyev’s son, Algushad Gulaliyev was charged with causing a fight at school #165 on September 20, 2013. Khatai District Court convicted him of hooliganism and sentenced him to 6-month corrective labor and 15% deduction of his salary as fine. The charges against Algushad Gulaliyev were brought as part of a criminal case opened in connection with an incident in which Algushad himself was beaten and stabbed in September 2013.
