Prosecutor Seeks 8-Year Jail Sentence for Journalist

Baku Grave Crimes Court held a hearing on the criminal case of Jam.az website editor Fikrat Faramazoglu. The proceeding was initially scheduled to start at 4pm, but was later postponed till 5pm. However, it started earlier than that. At the hearing chaired by Eldar Mikayilov, the prosecutor made a speech. He asked the court to ban Faramazoglu from journalistic activities for 3 years and sentence him to 8 years in prison. After that, Faramazoglu’s lawyer Javad Javadov was invited to speak. He asked the court to give him time to prepare for his speech. The judge granted the lawyer’s motion and set the next hearing for 9 June.
The criminal case against Faramazoglu was initiated on 30 June 2016 under Article 182 (extortion) of the Criminal Case, and a pre-trial detention order was issued against the journalist.
