International human rights defense organization Reporters Without Borders yesterday released a report rating international media freedom. Azerbaijan has fallen to 152nd place.
The reason for this drop in rankings is the persecution of journalists and the continued violation of their rights. The report reflected the government’s defiance of European Court of Human Rights rulings, notably regarding the release of journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, and youth bloggers Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizade.
Reporters Without Borders Secretary General Jean-François Julliard said that the situation in the European Union has deteriorated. Finland, Island, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland were recognized as the countries where the media is most free. Azerbaijan’s neighbours fare much better- Georgia is in 99th place and Armenia is in 101st place. Azerbaijan lags behind even Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan. The countries with the most media restrictions include Iran, Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea. Click on the following link to see the report in full.
