Imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov, who is being held in Prison #10, contacted his family via telephone yesterday, 10 December. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by the journalist’s spouse Rena Zahidova.
“First Sakit was concerned about the children’s health. And he said that his general condition is normal,” said R. Zahidova, adding that sending her husband back to prison affected them very negatively. “8 December was sad for the family. Sakit was sent back to the prison again. However, one week of freedom was no small period of time. Sadly enough, these days passed real quickly for us.”
Imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid, who is being held in Prison #17, has not contacted his family after he was sent back to prison. The journalist’s wife Ayanda Mursaliyeva told this to IRFS, stating that she usually has time to visit G.Zahidov on the weekends. “We will be able to visit him on 15 December for the first time after he was returned to the prison,” said Mursaliyeva.
Ganimat Zahid and Sakit Zahidov’s father Salim Zahidov died in the evening on 1 December. After the brothers’ mother Hadija Zahidov, and countless human rights activists, sent a telegram to the Justice Ministry, G. Zahid and S. Zahidov were temporarily released on the night of 2 December. On 8 December Zahidov brothers were sent back to their respective prisons.
