“Azadlig” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov has sued President Ilham Aliyev.
The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Sakit’s spouse Rena Zahidova, who visited him.
According to Rena Zahidova, S. Zahidov took this step due to the government’s repression encountered by his family. The journalist stated that he will prove this in court. The lawsuit has already been sent to the Sabail District Court by the leadership of the prison, added Rena Zahidova.
Sakit Zahidov was arrested on 23 June 2006 for possession of narcotics (this charge is widely understood to be spurious) and was sentenced to three year imprisonment by the decision of the Grave Crimes Court. There are only four and a half months left in his prison term.
