Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Monitoring Committee Special Rapporteur on Azerbaijan Andreas Herkel called “Azadlig” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov. Sakit Zahidov told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that A. Herkel congratulated the journalists on his release from prison and invited him to Europe. S. Zahidov thanked Herkel for all of the rapprteur’s assistance throughout the journalist’s imprisonment.
“Herkel visited me twice in Prison #14,” said S. Zahidov. “I told him that I respected former PACE co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan Andreas Gross and dedicated a poem to him. He took the poem to Europe with him.”
Saying that he will write a poem about Andreas Herkel, Sakit noted that he had a significant role in appointing a special rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
According to the journalist, whose has already published a poem in “Azadlig” Newspaper since his release, his poems will go on to be published in the same newspaper. “Bizim Yol” Newspaper will publish his satire. Talking about his future plans, Sakit noted that he will publish his third book. He doesn’t have a name for the book yet and does not deny that this might be delayed due to financial shortcomings, added Zahidov. He is also planning to publish a prison recollections book.
S. Zahidov said that he needs 15-20 days of medical treatment due to nerve problems. He is afraid to get treatment in Azerbaijan, and is hoping he will be able to go abroad. The journalist noted that he wants to receive the treatment in Norway but has financial problems and will appeal to people close to him to solve this problem.
