SITUATION OF PRESS AND SPEECH FREEDOM IN AZERBAIJAN DISCUSSED DURING MEETING OF PACE PERMANENT COMMITTEE

Council of Europe Parliament Assembly Monitoring Committee Co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan Andreas Herkel touched freedom of speech and press issues in Azerbaijan during a meeting of PACE’s Permanent Committee held in Madrid.

According to “Bizim Yol” Newspaper, Herkel, emphasizing that there are several imprisoned journalists in Azerbaijan as of yet, emphasized the commitments that Azerbaijan has taken before PACE.
Herkel talked about impediments Azerbaijani government intends to create for broadcasting of foreign radio stations.
Head of PACE Representative Board of Azerbaijan Samad Seyidov spoke during the meting and admitted to having problems in the area of human rights. Seyidov also noted that work is being done in this direction.
