On April 10th, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan heard the appeal filed by Khural reporter Aydin Janiyev against Shirvan City Appeals Court, which had denied his motion to launch a court investigation into his case, reported Janiyev’s lawyer Elchin Sadigov to the IRFS on April 12th.
According to the lawyer the case will be considered by Shirvan Appeals Court: “We want the court to annul the decision passed on Aydin Janiyev”.
Aydin Janiyev was arrested following a lawsuit by Sapnakaran village Muslims, who accused him of breaking the windows of the village mosque and insulting religious followers. He was sentenced to 12 days of administrative punishment. He was later charged under article 221.2.2 (hooliganism and resisting a police officer) and on September 20th he was sentenced to 2 months in jail by Lankaran City Court. On November 21st he was sentenced to 3 years in prison.
