SWEDISH PUBLIC DEMANDS FOR BLOGGERS’ RELEASE

September 7th, 2009
Swedish parliament deputies, Swedish members of the European Parliament, members of youth movements and several political leaders issued statements demanding that Adnan Hajizada and Emin Milli be released.

The parliament’s Socio-Democratic, Left-wing and Green party members made a joint statement demanding that EU observers be sent to monitor the bloggers’ trial in Baku, according to information given to “Turan” IA by the diplomatic sources. Members of the parliament’s committee on foreign affairs urged Azerbaijan’s authorities to immediately free the bloggers.
The Swedish Youth Federation demanded for immediate release of bloggers also. In their letter to Ilham Aliyev, leaders of youth organizations of all seven political parties represented in the parliament expressed concern about politically motivated arrest of Hajizada and Milli and demanded that they should be immediately released.
In their joint statement, PACE Swedish delegation and Human Rights group members emphasized violations observed during proceedings into the investigation of the case against the bloggers. In general, there are severe violations in the provision of freedom of speech and democracy. As a member of the Council of Europe, PACE and EU partner-country, Azerbaijan must adhere to its obligations, and ensure supremacy of law and independence of juridical system.
