U.S. CONGRESSMAN ADDRESSES LETTER TO FATULLAYEV AND APPEAL TO PRESIDENT

Imprisoned editor-in-chief of “Gundalik Azerbaijan” and “Realniy Azerbaijan” newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev received a letter from a member of the U.S. Congress.

“Gundalik Azerbaijan” Newspaper editor Shahvalad Chobanoglu told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety.

According to Chobanoglu, the letter was written by a congressman with the last name Taylor, and Fatullayev is advised to appeal to Supreme Court Plenum to reconsider the criminal case about him. “The Congressman states that he is familiar with the criminal case filed against Eynulla Fatullayev. He believes, Fatullayev can prove his innocence, if he appeals to the Supreme Court Plenum.”

According to Chobanoglu, the congressman sent an appeal to the president and noted in this appeal that the reconsideration of Fatullayev’s case in the Supreme Court Plenum is necessary. “The Congressman mentions in the appeal that Fatullayev can get compensation from the government for being held wrongfully during this period,” said Chobanoglu.

However, Fatullayev questions the suggestion of the congressman. “Fatullayev doesn’t expect fair decision from any of the Azerbaijani courts. His case will be considered in the European Court of Human Rights and he is confident that only this court will approve a fair decision,” said Chobanoglu.
