WHETHER ZAHIDOV BROTHERS WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR FATHER’S 40 DAY CEREMONY NOT KNOWN YET

On 11 January 40 days will have passed since the death of the father of imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Ganimat Zahid and “Azadlig” newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov.

However, it is not known yet whether the imprisoned brothers will be permitted to participate in their father’s 40 day ceremony.
Today, 5 October, Ayanda Mursaliyeva visited her spouse Ganimat Zahid. A.Mursaliyeva told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety, “Ganimat does not intend to appeal to be released temporarily to participate in the ceremony. He thinks there’s no need to appeal for these issues; he and his brother will be released if it is desired.”
However, it is not known yet whether Sakit Zahidov will appeal to the leadership of the prison to be released temporarily to participate in his father’s ceremony. His wife Rena Zahidova told IRFS that she will visit Sakit on Wednesday and will learn Sakit’s position on the issue.
Ganimat Zahid and Sakit Zahidov's father Salim Zahidov died in the evening on 1 December. G. Zahid and S. Zahidov were temporarily released on the night of 2 December to participate in the funeral of their father. On 8 December the Zahidov brothers were sent back to their respective prisons.
Ganimat Zahidov was arrested on 11 November, 2007, and was sentenced to four year imprisonment on 7 March 2008. Sakit Zahidov was arrested on 23 June 2006 for possession of narcotics (this charge is widely understood to be spurious) and was sentenced to three year imprisonment by the decision of the Grave Crimes Court. Only five months left till his prison term ends.
